A happy-to-be-outdoors Empty Set.
In April 2009, my super folk-indie-pop group Empty Set released our first album on the wonderful Tough Love Records imprint.
It features nine songs recorded and produced by our good friend Jacob Maddams in the summer of 2008; seven written by me along with covers of songs by Cole Porter and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Beautiful hand-drawn sleeve illustration comes courtesy of another talented friend, Ben Dorning. I designed and typeset the artwork myself.
Praise.
Here’s some nice things people have had to say about As Neat As a New Pin.
You might be thinking by now that the Empty Set have it all. And you’d be right, they do. 88/100 — The Line Of Best Fit.
It’s between these two points that As Neat As A New Pin exists; sometimes it behaves as a typical folk album, all soft vocals and delicate ukuele, other times it veers off into a soundtrack of tape loops and droning strings. It’s this willingness to experiment, coupled with a lyrical slant as concerned with science and mathematics as it is with unrequited love, that makes Empty Set more than just another twee, folk outfit. 7/10 — Die Shellsuit, Die!
An absolute corker. — Song, by Toad.
Blimey. — James Sui.
Have a listen.
